Getting there together – 150 years of VR VR is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2012. The year will celebrate the history of Finnish railways and the importance of railway services as an ecofriendly, versatile form of transport. Electrified commuter traffic in Helsinki region began in January 40 years ago. The first electrified line in Finland was Helsinki-Kirkkonummi. [05.11.2008] The Engineman’s Journey The Engineman’s Journey -exhibition is now at the Finnish Labour Museum Werstas in Tampere. The exhibition will be open from 30th of January 2009 in Hyvinkää at the Finnish Railway Museum. [16.09.2008] 100 years old station building in Kauniainen One hundred years old station building in Kauniainen (about 15 km from Helsinki) was burnt badly at 30th of August. The station was constructed between 1906-1908 and it was designed by architect Bruno F.Granholm (1857-1930). [02.09.2008] A new research to the museum library In the Finnish Railway Museum library, soon there will be 16 000 volumes! One of the newest is Michael Galanakis, M.A., entitled “Space Unjust. Socio-Spatial Discrimination in Urban Public Space. Cases from Helsinki and Athens”. [26.06.2008] Museum´s birthday competition There was a birthday competition at the birthday party of the 110 years old Finnish Railway Museum. [28.03.2008] Workshops of museum work The Finnish Railway Museum will be 110 years this year. We arrange workshops for school children and students, where they can learn about museum work. [25.02.2008] Next summer the Railway Museum opens at 10 a.m. In the summer 2008 the Finnish Railway Museum will have longer opening hours. [04.01.2008] Building of Finnish Railways started 150 years ago The rescript of building the first railway in Finland was signed by the Russian Emperor Alexander II. The matter of the first railway was under consideration at the senate meeting on 13th of March 1857.
